The difference between NPN and PNP output states of cylindrical photoelectric sensor

 

(1) Voltage Output Differences
The key difference between NPN and PNP Cylindrical Photoelectric Sensor lies in their output voltage levels. NPN-type switches output a low level, while PNP-type switches output a high level.

Reason: When a signal triggers the photoelectric switch, the NPN type connects the signal output line (OUT) to GND (ground). Since the NPN's GND is linked to Vee (the negative terminal of the DC power supply), the OUT line effectively outputs a low level. On the other hand, the PNP type connects the signal output line (OUT) to VCC (the positive terminal of the DC power supply), resulting in the OUT line outputting a high level.

 

(2) Internal Switch Connections
The internal wiring of NPN and PNP switches differs:

In NPN types, the internal switch connects the signal terminal to the negative terminal (GND).

In PNP types, the internal switch connects the signal terminal to the positive terminal (VCC).

 

(3) Signal Output Line Connections

NPN: When triggered, the signal output line (OUT) connects to GND, effectively outputting a low level.

PNP: When triggered, the signal output line (OUT) connects to VCC, effectively outputting a high level.

 

(4) Signal Behavior

NPN: In its default state, the output remains at a low potential. When a signal is detected, it switches to a high potential.

PNP: In its default state, the output remains at a high potential. When a signal is detected, it switches to a low potential.

 

Precautions tips of Cylindrical Photoelectric Sensor

 

1. Different materials are detected with varying detection distances;
2. Installation: Screw installation. Due to the influence of temperature and voltage, it is generally installed at 85% of the rated detection distance;
3. The testing surface should be regularly cleaned of metal dust and other sediments to avoid affecting performance;
4. Operating environment temperature: -25 ℃~+65 ℃; Relative humidity: 35-95% HR;
5. Vibration: Durability: 10~55Hz with a complex amplitude of 1.5mm, 2 hours each for X, Y, and Z;
6. Impact: Durability: 500m/s (about 50g), 10 times in X, Y, Z directions;
7. When used in a strong magnetic field environment, it is recommended to use shielded wires;
