Q:Can the Garantta GCS101 Optical Color Sensor detect transparent objects or highly reflective objects? How to handle these challenges?

 

Detecting transparent objects (such as glass bottles, transparent films) or highly reflective objects (such as glossy metal foil, mirrored labels) is a common challenge for color mark sensors. The GCS101's coaxial reflective optical design offers some adaptability to this, but proper handling is still necessary.

 

Principles and limitations of detecting transparent objects:
Principle: The light emitted by the sensor passes through the transparent object. If there is air behind it, most of the light will scatter; if there is a background (such as a roller, base plate), the light will be reflected back. Therefore, it actually detects the color or presence of the background behind the transparent object.

 

Application example: Detecting transparent areas printed on a transparent film. In this case, the sensor can be set to recognize the film itself (with background reflection). When the transparent area passes by, there is no reflection, thus generating a signal change.

 

Handling methods:
Provide a fixed, uniformly colored, and non-reflective background plate (such as matte white or black) directly behind the object.
Precisely adjust the distance between the sensor, the transparent object, and the background to find the most stable signal position.

 

Techniques for handling highly reflective objects:
Main problem: Specular reflection reflects most of the light away at a fixed angle, resulting in very little light received by the sensor, leading to weak or unstable signals.

 

Handling methods:
Tilted installation method: Do not install the Optical Color Sensor vertically facing the reflective surface. Try tilting it at an angle (e.g., 10-30 degrees) so that the emitted light strikes the surface at an angle, allowing some scattered light to be captured by the receiver.
Change the marking material: If possible, attach a small piece of matte tape or spray a matte mark on the reflective area that needs to be detected. The sensor will then detect this matte mark, significantly increasing the success rate.


Adjust sensitivity: During teaching, aim at an area on the reflective surface with a relatively strong signal, and you may need to use the device's fine-tuning knob to increase sensitivity appropriately.
